Going away is exciting, and it is easy to overlook the important things. Here is what we tell our own travellers — the essentials first, then the small things that make a big difference.

Passport
Many countries ask for at least six months’ validity on your return date, and some require you to carry it at all times — just not in the pool! For Europe, a British passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after you leave. Check the rules for your destination in the GOV.UK foreign travel advice (choose the country, then “Entry requirements”).
Visa
Check whether you need a visa or travel authorisation, and apply with plenty of time to spare. We can help with your application.
Europe’s new border checksNew
The EU Entry/Exit System means you may need to register your fingerprints and photo at the border on your first visit, so allow extra time. An online travel authorisation (ETIAS) for UK visitors is also expected — we’ll let you know when it applies.
Vaccinations
Check well in advance whether you need vaccinations — appointments can take time. See the country list on TravelHealthPro.
Safety
In case of emergency, know how to contact the local British embassy, high commission or consulate. Find a British embassy.
Cash
Carry a little cash in pounds and the local currency. Shop around for the best rates with no commission — compare travel money rates.
Flights
Check in online when offered and check your flight details for any airline changes.
Time
Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before UK and European flights — and allow for traffic. Check your airline’s own rules.

Travel insurance
Nothing is more important than being prepared. Cover can be inexpensive — or included with some bank accounts — while being without it can be very costly, from medical bills to lost luggage and delays.
Health cover in EuropeNew
A free UK Global Health Insurance Card gives access to state healthcare in the EU. It doesn’t replace travel insurance. Apply free on the NHS website — never pay an unofficial site.
Your rights
If your flight is delayed or cancelled you may be entitled to care, a refund or compensation. See your rights on the CAA website.
Departure tax
Some countries charge a departure tax at the airport. Ask us when you book — we’ll tell you whether it’s included in your ticket and how much to have ready.
Accommodation
Keep a copy of your booking and the address with you, wherever you’re staying.
Hand luggage
Check what you can carry on board — liquid rules now differ between UK airports, so check yours before you fly. GOV.UK hand luggage rules. Don’t forget adaptors, sunglasses, phone and charging cables.
Suitcase
Check your baggage allowance and weigh your case at home to avoid expensive surprises. Are you going to need your swimsuit?
Medication
Carry a doctor’s letter and a copy of your prescription, check airline rules, and check restrictions in the country you’re visiting.
Sports, music & camera equipment
Do you need it? Is it insured? Is it packed safely? Are there extra costs to take it with you?
