A country of golden pagodas
Myanmar is one of Asia’s most beautiful countries, with the shimmering Shwedagon Pagoda, the temple plains of Bagan and the stilt villages of Inle Lake. Tell us what you’d like to see and we’ll help you shape the trip.
Where to go

Thousands of ancient temples across the plain, best seen at sunrise.

Leg-rowing fishermen, stilt villages and floating gardens.

Many travellers pair a short Yangon visit with time in Thailand.
Culture and customs
Myanmar is primarily Buddhist and traditional; modesty and respect at religious sites are important.
Temples and pagodas. Remove shoes and socks before entering a pagoda or monastery. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops can cause offence.
Respect the Buddha. Disrespectful images of the Buddha, including tattoos, can break Myanmar’s laws on insulting religion.
Photography. Don’t photograph or film police, demonstrations, military installations or military personnel.
Drones. Don’t bring a drone unless you have the necessary permits before you travel.
Money. Myanmar is largely cash-based and many ATMs don’t accept UK cards. Bring US dollar notes in good condition — no folds, tears or pen marks.

Travelling to Myanmar — quick answers
Can’t see your question? Send us a message or WhatsApp us.
Is it safe to travel to Myanmar?
The FCDO advises against all travel to large parts of Myanmar, including Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon and Rakhine states, Shan State North, Sagaing and Magway regions and parts of Mandalay, Bago and Tanintharyi regions. It advises against all but essential travel to other areas, including Mandalay Region (where Bagan is) and Shan State South (home to Inle Lake). Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice, so check the latest advice for every place on your route before you book.
Do I need a visa for Myanmar with a British passport?
Yes. You must have a visa before you travel — there is no visa on arrival. Tourists apply online for an eVisa, which allows a single stay of up to 28 days and needs proof of a return ticket and hotel booking. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival, and you complete a customs declaration form when you land.
How do I get to Myanmar from the UK?
There are no direct flights. Most travellers connect in Bangkok or Singapore to Yangon, taking from about 15 hours in total.
When is the best time to visit?
November to February is cool and dry. March and April are very hot, and the rainy season runs from May to October.
