About Brazil

A continent-sized adventure

Brazil is big, bold and endlessly varied — Rio’s beaches and mountain views, the vast Iguaçu Falls, the colourful streets of Salvador and the wildlife of the Amazon and the Pantanal. With nonstop flights from Heathrow, it’s easier to reach than many expect.

Where to go

Culture and customs

Brazilians are warm, sociable and expressive, and a friendly greeting is always welcome.

Carry ID. Carry a copy of your passport and another photo ID if you have one, and keep the original in a safe place.

Vapes are banned. All e-cigarettes and vaping devices, including refills and parts, are illegal and can be confiscated from your luggage.

Zero tolerance on drugs. Drug offences carry long jail sentences, even in transit. Never carry items for anyone else.

Book taxis, don’t hail them. Use app-based or pre-booked taxis rather than hailing them on the street.

Watch your card and drinks. Keep your card in sight, check the amount on the payment terminal, and buy your own drinks.

Don’t drink and drive. Police checkpoints are frequent and penalties include fines, licence suspension and prison.

Questions people ask

Travelling to Brazil — quick answers

Can’t see your question? Send us a message or WhatsApp us.

Do I need a visa for Brazil with a British passport?

No. GOV.UK says you can visit Brazil without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. To stay longer, contact the Federal Police before your permitted stay ends.

How long is the flight from the UK to Brazil?

Nonstop flights from Heathrow take about 11½ to 12 hours. British Airways and LATAM fly to São Paulo, and British Airways flies to Rio de Janeiro. Salvador and other cities are usually reached with one connection, for example via Lisbon or São Paulo.

When is the best time to visit Brazil?

Brazil’s seasons are the reverse of the UK’s. Spring (September to December) and autumn (March to June) are lovely for Rio and Iguaçu Falls, summer (December to March) is beach season, and the Pantanal is best for wildlife in the dry season.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Brazil?

Brazil doesn’t require a yellow fever certificate, but TravelHealthPro recommends the vaccine for travellers aged 9 months and over visiting many states — including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, Amazonas and Paraná (Iguaçu Falls) — and parts of Bahia. It isn’t recommended for Fortaleza, Recife and other unlisted areas. The vaccine is only given at registered yellow fever centres, so plan ahead.

Are there any areas of Brazil to avoid?

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to some remote river areas of Amazonas State: parts of the Amazon west of Codajás, the Itaquaí and Japurá rivers, and the Rio Negro north or west of Barcelos. Travelling against FCDO advice may invalidate your insurance, so read the latest GOV.UK advice before you go.
