About Nepal

Roof of the world

The temples and old squares of the Kathmandu Valley, lakeside Pokhara beneath the Annapurnas, rhino and elephant safaris in Chitwan and the birthplace of the Buddha at Lumbini — Nepal blends spirituality, adventure and breathtaking scenery. It suits trekkers, pilgrims, families and first-time visitors alike.

Culture and customs

Nepalis are warm and deeply spiritual, and respect at temples and holy places is much appreciated.

Greet with namaste. Palms together with a slight bow and “namaste” is the traditional greeting for everyone.

Dress for holy places. Avoid shorts and sleeveless tops in temples and holy places, and take your shoes off where asked. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside certain parts of some Hindu temples.

Keep affection private. Public displays of affection are seen as inappropriate for all couples.

Trek with a guide. Foreign trekkers must use a local guide or porter in national parks and protected areas, and need a valid permit and TIMS card for the main trekking regions.

Carry your passport. Keep your passport with you and leave a copy somewhere safe.

Laws to know. Drug penalties are harsh, and products containing CBD are illegal. It is illegal to buy or sell wildlife or animal parts without a licence.

Travelling to Nepal — quick answers

Can’t see your question? Send us a message or WhatsApp us.

Do I need a visa for Nepal with a British passport?

Yes. You must have a visa to visit Nepal for up to 90 days. You can get a visa on arrival: apply online on the official Nepal immigration portal up to 15 days before arrival, then use your submission receipt to collect and pay for the visa at the airport (cards accepted, but carry cash, ideally US dollars, as a backup). You can also apply in advance and collect the visa from the Nepal Embassy. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

How long is the flight from the UK to Nepal?

There are no nonstop flights from the UK. Most travellers connect in Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Delhi, with a total journey of about 13 to 16 hours. Pokhara and other regions are reached by domestic flight or road from Kathmandu.

When is the best time to visit Nepal?

Autumn (October and November) brings the clearest skies and is the most popular trekking season, and spring (March to May) is also excellent, with rhododendrons in bloom. December and January are cold but bright, while the monsoon from June to September brings most of the year’s rain.

Is Nepal safe for trekking?

Foreign trekkers must use a local guide or porter in national parks and protected areas, need a permit and TIMS card, and should never trek alone. GOV.UK also warns about altitude, weather, flooding and landslides, and notes that Nepali airlines do not meet international safety standards and are on the UK Air Safety List. Make sure your insurance covers trekking altitudes and helicopter rescue, and check the latest GOV.UK travel advice before you go.

Can Travel Style book my whole Nepal trip?

Yes. We’re IATA accredited, so we issue flights ourselves and can add hotels, transfers, safaris and guided treks in one booking — with one team to message before, during and after your trip.
